Wine Wednesday Featuring Our Unique Lakeview Cellars 2017 Kerner!
Welcome to Wine Wednesday! Lakeview Wine Co.'s weekly blog post highlighting our favourite VQA wines, food pairings ideas, and more! This week we are featuring our Lakeview Cellars 2017 Kerner , one of the most unique varietals that we produce at Lakeview Wine Co. The 2017 vintage of our Lakeview Cellars Kerner is not only a popular pick among our staff, but also won a Silver medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships 2018 in the Other Single Vitus Vinifera Whites Category!
Kerner is an aromatic white grape originating from Germany. It was bred in 1929 by August Herold by crossing Trollinger (a red variety also known as Schiava grossa or Vernatsch) and Riesling. Kerner buds late and so the shoots mature well and show a considerable resistance to cold winters. It can survive at temperature of – 10°C! Compared to Riesling, Kerner can be grown in less favourable conditions and has bigger yields. Common characteristic of Kerner are transparent straw yellow, sometimes with golden reflex in colour. A pronounced varietal bouquet, often with a Muscat tone; fresh aromas offer a tasty blend of mixed white fruits, with hints of apple, grapefruit and a tropical whiff of mango. Resembling Riesling, Kerner wines are fresh, and fruity, but yet milder in acidity and showing more body.
The Lakeview Cellars 2017 Kerner displays notes of intense tropical and citrus fruits such as pineapple, mango, grapefruit and lime with soft floral hints. The palate is lean but complex, starting sweet with floral flavours and balanced by a racy, lime acidity leading to a clean & refreshing finish.
The Lakeview Cellars 2017 Kerner is a very versatile wine which lends itself to easy pairings. The ultimate summer wine, it pairs well with the full range of BBQ foods. From Bobby Flay's Grilled Chicken Breasts with Spicy Peach Glaze to Rachael Ray's Pasta Salad with Lemon-Pesto Dressing, you can trust in the Lakeview Cellars 2017 Kerner's ability to enhance both the meal and experience!
